Your wellbeing matters: June 2025

Published: 29th May 2025

Shining the spotlight on the importance of personal wellbeing for medical and dental professionals.

This month, we’re focusing on Men’s Health Week, Pride Month, and support offerings in light of recent events in Liverpool. We recognise the vital work you do and the pressures you face. Our goal is to make sure you feel supported, seen, and valued wherever you’re training.

Men’s Health Week (9th-15th June)

Men’s Health Week shines a light on the unique health challenges men face, encouraging early action and support—especially important in high-pressure roles like yours. Long hours, emotional demands, and the expectation to remain resilient can take a toll.

This year’s campaign encourages all men to pause, reflect, and take steps towards both physical and mental wellbeing.

  • Four in five suicides are by men, with suicide the biggest cause of death for men under 35 (UK Parliament).

According to the BUPA Wellbeing Index:

  • 50% of men have struggled with mental health difficulties at some point, yet fewer than half have sought medical advice
  • 30% of men surveyed said they didn’t know where to turn for advice or support

The Men’s Health Forum (MHF) is a UK charity leading the conversation, offering practical resources, awareness campaigns, and a series of workshops and webinars targeted at healthcare professionals throughout the week.

Pride Month

June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, and raise  awareness of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals - including healthcare professionals like you.

As your employer, we want you to know that we are here to support your wellbeing and ensure as best as possible that you work in an environment where you feel respected and valued, no matter where you are working.

There are several key support networks and helplines available to LGBTQ+ individuals which can be invaluable both during Pride Month and throughout the year. Stonewall is the UK’s largest LGBTQ+ rights charity, dedicated to campaigning for equality and acceptance. They provide a wide range of resources and training to help create inclusive workplaces, including healthcare settings, and actively run campaigns and events during Pride Month. Another vital resource is The LGBT Foundation, a national charity offering confidential advice, support, and information services across the UK. They provide helplines, counselling, peer support groups, and resources on mental and sexual health, making them a crucial source of support for anyone facing personal or workplace challenges related to their LGBTQ+ identity.

For those seeking mental health support specifically tailored to LGBTQ+ people, MindOut offers counselling, peer groups, and advocacy focused on improving mental wellbeing within the community. Meanwhile, Samaritans is a well-known UK-wide charity providing 24/7 confidential emotional support to anyone struggling to cope, including healthcare professionals facing stress or burnout. Although not LGBTQ+ specific, Samaritans’ non-judgmental and empathetic service is available to all.

Recent events: support is available

We understand that many of you are currently training in the North West, particularly within the Merseyside region. In light of the recent tragic incident in Liverpool on Monday 26th May, we want to acknowledge the potential emotional impact this may have had.

If you have been affected in any way by the events of that day, please know that support is available. Our Wellbeing Team is here for you should you wish to talk to someone in confidence. Whether you choose to reach out to a peer, a trusted colleague, or access our formal health and wellbeing services, we encourage you to do so. Please don’t hesitate to seek support if you need it.
