Doctor competes against hundreds to be awarded prestigious scholarship

Published: 10th November 2023

A trainee doctor, currently on a GP placement in Loughborough has competed against 141 applicants from across 27 countries to be selected for a renowned scholarship.

Dr Hina Kanani, an ST3 trainee from Leicester, currently under MWL Lead Employer, has been selected to join the Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA) Scholars programme. The scholarship is set up to develop and nurture healthcare leaders of the future. Following a rigorous selection process, Hina has been invited to join the academy’s cohort for the 2023/24 academic year.

Speaking about the opportunity, Hina said: “I am so grateful to have been selected for the HLA scholarship 2023/2024. I cannot wait to embark on this journey, further developing my leadership potential, to make a positive difference in healthcare. It will also be a great opportunity to network and build a community with other healthcare professionals.”

As part of the role, scholars are expected to develop a community project over the course of the one-year programme, with previous projects having reached national prominence, winning prizes, publications and presentations at national events including at the House of Lords.

Universities and healthcare organisations have benefitted immensely from staff and students becoming scholars. Scholars have developed high-profile projects that have had an impact nationally and internationally.

Founded in 2016, the HLA scholarship recognises healthcare students and professionals with proven leadership abilities and gives them the opportunity to take their leadership skills to the next level. This year’s cohort has a mix of medical students from across all clinical specialties, including doctors, nurses and dentists.

The HLA programme was formed in response to the demand from young clinicians and medical students to learn about leadership. The aim of the programme is to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and develop their understanding of leadership.
