Reducing stigma around mental health issues in men

Published: 11th June 2024

10th – 16th June 2024 is Men's Health Week. It's an important awareness campaign that aims to promote men's health and wellbeing, both physically and mentally.

Healthcare professionals of all genders – but particularly men - are at higher risk of developing mental health issues due to the demanding nature the work.

By promoting awareness and reducing stigma around mental health issues in men, we can work towards creating a healthier and more supportive society for all.

Statistics about men’s mental health

- Only 36% of all NHS referrals for psychological therapies are for men. Men are less likely to seek help for their mental health (Mental Health UK)

- 46% of men would be embarrassed or ashamed to tell their employer about mental health struggles (Men’s Health Forum)

- 75% of deaths by suicide are males (Mental Health UK)

- Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under the age of 50 in the UK (Calm Zone)

What can I do if I need support?

There are lots of things we can do to manage and support mental health. A good way to find something that might work for you is the CAN DO challenge. This focuses on five things that are scientifically-proven to help us feel better - connecting with others, being active, noticing the environment around you, discovering something new and offering to help someone else.

Along with checking out our Wellbeing Hub for a host of valuable resources, we would also encourage you to fill in our trainee wellbeing referral form. As your employer, it’s our duty to help you during your time of need and strive to ensure that you feel safe when sharing your concerns with us.

Traditional masculine norms can create a culture of silence around mental health issues, but by encouraging open conversations, we can improve overall wellbeing, reduce burnout, and enhance the quality of care provided to patients.
